Are thicker shingles better for your roof?

Roofing ShinglesWhat are the benefits of thicker shingles?

If you’re thinking about replacing your roof, you’re probably not thinking about how thick your shingles should be. Most homeowners are unaware that some shingles are thicker than others, much less that the thickness of a shingle can affect its longevity.

This raises one major question, however: Are thicker shingles better for your roof?

Three-tab shingles vs architectural shingles: what is the difference?

There are many different types of shingles on the market, but asphalt shingles tend to be the most popular and more cost-effective choice for Texas homeowners. You can choose from a variety of colors and types of shingles, making it much easier to find the perfect look for your house. Asphalt shingles come in two main types: three-tab shingles and architectural shingles.

Three-tab shingles are divided into three sections at the bottom. Compared to their competitors, these shingles are lightweight.

In architectural shingles, the upper half has an extra layer of asphalt, and the lower half does not have tabs. Architectural shingles are very similar to three-tab asphalt shingles, with two very distinct differences: they have an extra layer of asphalt on the lower half, and they do not have tabs. The dimensional shingles give a roof more depth, increasing curb appeal.

What are the benefits of thick shingles on a roof?

Roof damage is more likely to occur early on if your shingles are thinner or more brittle. It is possible to have some damage covered by the shingle manufacturer’s warranty, but if you choose three-tab asphalt shingles rather than architectural shingles, you will likely have to replace your roof sooner.

There are a number of benefits associated with the extra laminated layer of asphalt on the bottom half of architectural shingles.

1. DURABILITY IMPROVED

Roofing systems that use metal, clay tile, or slate are inflexible. They’re tough, but rigidity also makes them brittle. In contrast, both three-tab and architectural shingles are asphalt-based and reinforced with either fiberglass or organic materials. Unlike most other types of shingles, they are more flexible and affordable, and are better able to withstand snow and light hailstorms thanks to their composition.

2. UNDERLAYER PROTECTION

Under your shingles is either felt paper or synthetic underlayment. For added protection, all Covered Roofing contractors install underlayer at the eaves and valleys. Decking (or plywood) lies beneath that. Paper and plywood are protected from the elements by shingles. Compared to standard three-tab shingles, architectural shingles are slightly heavier, so they can withstand stronger winds.

Protecting your roof decking prevents leaks that can damage the trusses and ultimately, your roof’s structural integrity. As a result, vaulted ceilings and attic treasures can be handed down with confidence to the next generation.

3. ROOF REPAIR AND REPLACEMENT COSTS REDUCED

By replacing your roof with thicker asphalt shingles, you invest in high quality and longevity. Over the next 15 years, a longer-lasting roof means fewer expenses for repair or even replacement.

Whether it’s your home, garage, or backyard shed, All Covered Roofing offers CertainTeed asphalt shingles in a variety of colors. Roof Shingles with Durability

A CertainTeed roof shingle is designed to be extremely durable. The shingles are designed to withstand harsh weather conditions, such as high winds, heavy rain, and extreme temperatures. Especially in the harsh South weather, they are less likely to suffer from damage and will last longer than other types of shingles. CertainTeed’s products are fully warranted, so you can rest assured that you’re investing in a durable product.

Energy Efficient Shingles

When it comes to energy efficiency, CertainTeed roof shingles have a lot to offer. Solaris® and Presidential Solaris® from CertainTeed are “cool roof” products that reflect solar energy, even in darker colors, which can reduce the amount of heat absorbed by your roof. The hot summer months will make your home more comfortable and you’ll have lower energy bills.

Asphalt Shingles

CertainTeed offers a wide variety of asphalt shingle options, so you can choose the look that best suits your home. They offer strip shingles, dimensional shingles, and luxury shingles.

Strip Shingles

Strip shingles are the original type of shingle, often called 3-tab shingles. Strip shingles were the most popular shingle prior to the 1980s. In spite of the introduction of designer shingles, they remain popular due to their affordability and light weight. Asphalt strip shingles have a flat appearance, similar to slate, since they are made from a single layer of asphalt. A CertainTeed strip shingle, XTTM 25, is available.

Dimensional Shingles

Dimensional shingles, often called laminate shingles or architectural shingles, have become the most popular asphalt shingles. The “dimensional” look is achieved by using two or more layers of asphalt. For a very pleasing aesthetic, these shingles can be manufactured to look like wood shakes or natural slate roofing. Landmark® shingles are CertainTeed’s most popular dimensional shingles.

Luxury Shingles

The highest quality laminate shingles you can buy are luxury shingles. Not only do luxury shingles offer premium protection from the elements, but they also provide the most beautiful options for asphalt shingles you can find, thanks to the many options for coloration and dimensionality. You can get an authentic old-world wood shake look with the price and durability of asphalt shingles when you choose luxury shingles. CertainTeed’s Grand Manor® and Carriage House® products are two luxury shingle options that customers love.

How much do roof shingles cost?

Compared to other high-quality roofing materials, CertainTeed roof shingles are competitively priced. The upfront cost of these shingles may be higher than some other cheap options, but they are durable and energy-efficient. CertainTeed shingles are also easy to install. You can save time and money on installation by using these easy-to-install shingles.
