Three-tab shingles vs architectural shingles: what is the difference?

There are many different types of shingles on the market, but asphalt shingles tend to be the most popular and more cost-effective choice for Texas homeowners. Asphalt shingles come in two main types: three-tab shingles and architectural shingles.

Three-tab shingles are divided into three sections at the bottom. Compared to their competitors, these shingles are lightweight.

In architectural shingles, the upper half has an extra layer of asphalt, and the lower half does not have tabs. Architectural shingles are very similar to three-tab asphalt shingles, with two very distinct differences: they have an extra layer of asphalt on the lower half, and they do not have tabs. The dimensional shingles give a roof more depth, increasing curb appeal.

It is possible to have some damage covered by the shingle manufacturer’s warranty, but if you choose three-tab asphalt shingles rather than architectural shingles, you will likely have to replace your roof sooner.
